Residential School Recovery Coordinator

Overview:

The Ulkatcho First Nation Residential School Coordinator will lead the implementation of a program of healing and recovery in response to the impact of the Indian Residential School system on indigenous children and families.

The Residential School Coordinator will report to the Wellness Manager. This position involves aspects of all UFN departments which requires collaboration with the directors and managers of all departments. The coordinator will be required to work with and alongside the heads of all departments to ensure the community needs for recovery are met.

 

Duties/Scope of Work

The Indian Residential School services Response Coordinator will:

·         Attend all UFN working group committee meetings to develop recovery strategies.

·         Be a member of the UFN working group.

·         Review and seek information on recovery programs and funding sources.

·         Work in collaboration with all stakeholders.

·         Implement action items.

·         Adhere to a strict code of confidentiality and respect for community culture and traditions.

·         In conjunction with the health department, negotiate/locate facilities and beds for trauma counselling.

·         Identify survivors of the residential and day schools and hospital locations that UFN members attended.

·         Identify members taken during the 60’s scoop.

·         Compile a data base of health, RCMP, alcohol and drug, death rates, homeless and other pertinent information for statistical analysis and health related issues.

·         Lobby government agencies for supports and funding to fulfill the mandate of the working group.

·         Support community members filling out claim applications etc.

·         Other duties as assigned.

 

The Indian Residential School Coordinator will facilitate support services to all UFN members. These services will include but not be limited to:

·         Trauma informed supports and referrals

·         Traditional supports

·         Provide information on federal programs and services offered in response to this crisis.

·         Traditional responses to crisis support

·         Organize healthy living workshops and on the land cultural and counselling events.

·         Keep Chief and Council informed of progress through written and oral reports at Council meetings.

The work may include on call and after-hours response in helping members access resources such as therapists and crisis line support. The coordinator will also perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Confidentiality

It is recognized that there is a significant amount of multigenerational trauma and suffering, the coordinator will respect the individual’s right to disclose personal information from victims and their families. Informed consent must be obtained from these individuals prior to recording and sharing of names, personal stories, medical history, victim statements and any other information that is personal.

In addition, the Residential School Coordinator will abide by the UFN confidentiality standards specified in the UFN employee policy and imbedded in the employment contract.

 

Education and Work Experience:

Extensive knowledge of community mental health programs and services as well as knowledge of provincially and federally offered supports and services. The applicant should be knowledgeable with computers and be able to work independently. The applicant will be responsible for the implementation of the UFN goals and mandate and needs to be able to write and submit reports. Applicant must also demonstrate a working knowledge of mental health services available to indigenous families and communities.

 

Other Requirements:

·         Must be computer literate with a good understanding of the Microsoft Office applications.

·         Background in Social Development or Project Management

·         Class 5 driver license

·         Reliable vehicle

·         Ability to travel on short notice.

·         Criminal Record check

 

Work Location

The Residential School Coordinator is required to reside in the Anahim Lake Area.
