ULKATCHO Monitor- Needed ASAP

Position Summary

The Ulkatcho Monitor and Guardians have an important role to assert Ulkatcho First Nations rights and title, and to monitor the traditional territory activities in regard to resource extraction, tourism, hunting and freshwater, terrestrial and cultural resources.

Specifically, the Ulkatcho Guardians maintain a presence throughout the territory while out on patrol; monitor the impacts of resource use; observe, record and report violations to our indigenous policies, as well as provincial and federal regulations; accurately collect and monitoring data; and report/download their activities to the Chunta Resources Society. Their work supports all the Ulkatcho Natural Resources lead caribou restoration work, research projects, water quality monitoring, as well as a variety of other projects including fire management on the landscape.

Duties:

  • Maintain a presence throughout the territory on behalf of the Ulkatcho First Nation
    •  Conduct monitoring patrols throughout territory (including occasional multi-day trips)
    • Communicate with all visitors on the Ulkatcho traditional territory, share information about the Ulkatcho First Nation, and offer assistance where necessary
    • Interact with resource users, including sports fishermen, and other commercial operators
    •  Respond to community emergencies such as forest fires and wildlife encounters that require immediate attention.
  • Monitor and collect data as described by the Natural Resource Director.
    • Respond professionally to violations in an appropriate manner by approaching resource users and documenting relevant information
  • Respond to community reports regarding illegal or suspicious activities in the Ulkatcho traditional territory
  • Build relationships with provincial and federal enforcement agency staff
    •  Build and maintain productive relationships with federal and provincial agency staff
    •  Conduct joint patrols with relevant enforcement agencies where appropriate
  • Conduct community outreach and education
    •  Educate community members about Ulkatcho First Nation issues and Indigenous
  • Guardian activities and report to Chief and Council periodically.

Hours: Full Time with a wage dependent on certification and experience
